TriField TF2 EMF Safe Levels vs. EMF Safe Limits
The TriField TF2 by AlphaLabs Inc. is probably one of the best economy EMF meters on the market today and I am here to discuss a poorly understood section of the manual that has been brought up by a number of inquiring readers.
On Page 4 Question 5 the question: “What is a safe level of EMF?” (not exact quotes but that is what they mean; please see the section below) is asked and they give some numbers with a strong caveat.
“Absolute safe levels for electromagnetic or radio frequency fields have not been established. However according to our research, there have not been problems associated with staying below:”
Well, they are not wrong about either the absolute safe values or problems staying below these levels.
However, does that mean higher levels are damaging?
3 mG Standard Magnetic or 5 mG Weighted Magnetic mG is milliGauss a measure of magnetic flux density
50 V / m Standard or Weighted Electric V / m is Volts per Meter or an AC electric field measurement
0.2 mW / m^2 RF (field measurement) or 1.000 mW / m^2 (peak measurement) mW / m^2 is milliWatts per meter squared which is an important unit discussed below
All numbers averaged over 24 hours.
This isn’t practical as the stated battery life of the TF2 is rated at 20 hours and there is no averaging function. Also, these levels are so low as discussed below that there is no need to average over such a long period of time. Even the FCC only requires an averaging function of 6 minutes for Occupational RF and 30 minutes for General Population exposure.
On the following Page 5 they continue with:
“Legal maximum exposure levels are MUCH higher than the levels described above”
There are a number of authoritative agencies including the FCC, ICNIRP, ACGIH, etc. which have established guidelines but are NOT legally enforceable. There are NO LEGAL maximum EMF safety exposure levels that are enforceable in the USA except possibly in the workplace through OSHA’s General Duty Clause with regard to RF radiation and possible EMI effects on biomedical implants such as pacemakers. Even then, OSHA only requires RF warning signs at 10 mW / cm^2. (notice that I am not including laser light radiation, nuclear radiation or extremely high powered RF sources such as military and weather radar)
“Some practitioners may recommend somewhat different levels.”
This statement could be more accurately characterized as VASTLY different levels as in orders of magnitude of difference.
I would agree that these are incredibly conservative levels (even lower than the FCC levels listed below) that should not cause an issue, but there are some pseudo-scientific organizations that advise even LOWER EMF levels than this.
Q. So why does the manufacturer from TriField put these guidelines in their manual?
A. Pretty simple; they are in the EMF meter manufacturing business, not the EMF consulting business and wish to redirect any EMF consulting questions back to the manual. I called the company myself and asked a representative if they put that in there because of the volume of calls they get regarding “safe levels” and they verified that was exactly correct. They get numerous requests for “What is a safe level of EMF?” and because they are an instrumentation manufacturer of EMF meters and not expert consultants for EMF, they added that information to the FAQ page to answer questions quickly.
I have multiple articles on this website including: https://emfsurvey.com/emf-dangerous-unsafe-levels-high/
So back to EMF Safe Levels vs. EMF Safe Limits; what is the difference between the two?
EMF Safe Levels would fall under EMF Safe Limits, but not the other way around.
An example of RF Safe Limits are given below in the FCC chart below as opposed to the EMF Safe Levels listed in the TF2 manual which are considerably lower.
*IMPORTANT NOTE – You have to pay close attention to UNITS, particularly with Radio Frequency radiation. The TF2 manual limits and meter ONLY measure in milliWatts per METER squared whereas MOST safety guidelines are in milliWatts per CENTIMETER squared.
What is the difference? The FCC numbers need to be multiplied by a factor of 10,000 to convert properly between mW / cm^2 to mW / m^2.
1 milliWatt per cm^2 = 10,000 mW / m^2 = 10 W / m^2
Also notice that the FCC limits are frequency dependent, but for most RF commonly encountered, the 1500 – 100,000 MHz range should cover 95% of RF found and it is an easy to remember set number of 5 mW / cm^2 for Occupational and 1 mW / cm^2 for the General Population. The most conservative range is in the 30 – 300 MHz range because at those wavelengths, the distances most closely match the physical dimensions of the human body such as the head, trunk, eyes, etc. BTW, most biomedical implants are rated at 100 V / m which equates to 2.65 mW / cm^2.
